Who Was Dihya? (Part 1)

Dihya or “al khahina” while Dihya was her given name at birth, al kahina was the name given to her by the Arabs it means “seer” or “witch” the name came from the fact that she used to have the power of foreseeing the future. A brave and ruthless queen, an Berber Khaleesi who lived in North Africa in the 7th century Born to a Jewish-Moorish-Berber tribe, she was an only child her father was a tribe leader. His name was Tabat ibn tifan.

She was only sixteen years old when she had a vision of her future lover “kousaila” dying after getting stabbed by an Arab soldier. She also saw him burning alive and disappearing into the fire along with a big part of her. After having these visions she knew for a fact that her future is hiding trouble.

Her father didn’t want her to be raised like other girls her age considering that she is the only heir of his position. So in an early age she learned how to fight and how to speak and behave just like all the sons of the other leaders and kings in that period.

She was beautiful and rebellious since her childhood her mother wanted to teach her how to cook and how to be a good wife but she wasn’t interested, all she wanted to do is to go on hunting trips with her father, he didn’t approve at first but she was so stubborn that even he couldn’t stop her.

She accompanied her father in every trip he went to and by that she became a really good rider. She grew up hearing all about the stories of her father and grandfather and how they were fierce leaders. These stories made her latter on the patriotic leader we now know and respect.

When she was sixteen her father gather all the other tribe leaders in order to announce Dihya as his one and only heir. Even though he had other sons from his mistresses none of them was fit to the position. Dihya was his only legitimate child.

When the Arab invaders came to the shores of Africa the king of the Berber tribes then “kousaila” invited her father to join him and his army to defend the country, when Dihya heard the news she begged her father many times to let her go with him to battle but he kept refusing until she decided to tell him the vision she had when she was young of kousaila dying after her father heard the story he accepted her request.

When she got there she found that the Arabic leader “okba ibn nafii” has already captured kousaila. He detained and tortured him.

The first time Dihya met kousaila is when she was with the resisting force attacking okba. She won kicked out Okba and freed kousaila.

From then on the only thing on kousaila’s mind was killing Okba the Arabic leader. Which he did latter on the next time they met in the battle field kousaila killed okba and his entire army.

After kousalila’s glorious triumph he married Dihya and gave her Okba’s head scarf as a wedding gift. After their marriage the new king and queen received wedding gifts from leaders from all over the continent. The leaders also paid allegiance to king kousaila and queen Dihya’s throne. They lived happily for a short period. Even though they knew that the situation isn’t going to last they enjoyed every last minute of it.

One day Dihya got the news that her father was sick so her husband kousaila told her to go and say goodbye and to take their children with her so they get to meet their grandfather before he dies. So that what she did but as soon as she arrived to her old tribe she got the news that the Arabs came with an army killed her husband and defeated his army.
